Master’s Degree Forms
Master’s Advancement to Candidacy Petition
Students completing an MA degree must submit the Master’s Advancement to Candidacy Petition form to the department SAO no later than Friday of Week 2 of the quarter they expect to receive the MA degree.
Nomination of Master’s Thesis Committee
Note: This form is used only for students completing the Islamic Studies MA degree. Students should submit the Nomination of Master’s Thesis Committee form prior to the Master’s Advancement to Candidacy Petition.
NELC Research Language Exams
The NELC department offers French and German language exams during week 3 or 4 of each academic quarter (Fall, Winter, Spring). Students interested in signing up for the exam should sign up at the link below.
Doctoral Degree Forms
Nomination of Doctoral Committee
All doctoral students must formally nominate their doctoral committee with the Division of Graduate Education. Students must have an approved doctoral committee prior to holding the oral defense. Doctoral committees must meet the minimum standards for doctoral committee constitution.
Reconstitution of the Doctoral Committee and/or Change in Final Oral Examination Requirement
Students who need to make a change to their committee members or final oral exam requirement should use this form.

Conference Travel Funding Support
NELC graduate students are eligible to receive travel and lodging reimbursement in the amount of $500 if presenting at a conference and $300 if only attending a conference. Graduate students can receive NELC conference travel support funds, once Doctoral Travel Grant (DTG) funds have been exhausted. Each student may not exceed the max of $500 for all cumulative conference trips per academic year (July 1-June 30).
To first use your DTG funds available, from UCLA Division of Graduate Education, please refer to their policies and guidelines. The above and below information is for NELC conference travel support funds only. Some policies may overlap.
To request NELC conference travel support funds, you will need to submit the following to nelcgraduates@humnet.ucla.edu.
- Proof that you have registered for the conference.
- If presenting, proof of your accepted paper at the conference.
Your NELC conference support request will be reviewed, approved, and processed by the NELC SAO. Processing times can range from 2-5 weeks, so plan ahead if you will be using these funds to purchase flights or lodging in advance of the conference you are attending.

- NELC PhD student in good standing
- Normative Time-to-Degree
- 3.0 GPA
- Registered/enrolled 12 units
